Do You Need To Switch Energy Providers?

Allen HartCentral Heating, Energy Saving

Are you are doing everything that you can to keep costs down but still feel like you are paying too much every month? You aren’t alone. Here’s a few things you should think about when it comes to switching energy providers…

Are you making the most of what you have?

The first thing to ask yourself is what are you actively doing to make sure you are saving money on your bills and is there more that they can do?

Let’s tackle those questions together. No matter what you are ACdoing, the best way to save money in the long run on your bills is to make sure you are getting the most out of your boiler and maximising the amount of heat that you retain from your boiler firing heat around your home.

While good insulation of your home is usually always a good way to make sure that happens, for arguments sake we will be focusing on things that you can do that won’t cost you money and utilises what you have. With this goal in mind, let’s go into what you can do to make sure you are making the most of what you already have in place.

How to make the most of what you have

A big tip that we give most homeowners looking to save money is to keep their thermostats at an optimum level and fight the urge to turn up the heat straight away if they are cold. Turning up the heat won’t heat your home up any quicker so the best thing that you can do is usually the most obvious one of wearing an extra layer of clothing in those winter months.

Getting your home at around 19-21 degrees is a good base level. Lowering your home’s thermostat by just 1 degree can save you up to £65 every year.

Another thing to keep in mind is your thermostat’s timer. All modern boilers have to have a timer so there is no excuse to not make great use of this feature. If you really think about it, you are never going to be in your home 24 hours of a day. This means that if you just leave your boiler on all the time, then it has to work harder to keep your home warm all of the time, rather than just the time that you’ll actually feel the benefit. After all, at some point we all have to get some sleep.

That’s why it’s a good idea to set your heat to turn on around 30 minutes before it’s time for you to wake up and around 30 minutes before you go to sleep. That way, you’ll never have to do without or wait for your home to heat up in those times it matters most. It also helps keep your boiler healthy as it can heat up more efficiently.

Is it then time to switch providers?

If after this you do not see much change in your bills, it might be time to look at your options. The one thing that we think you should know that if you’ve been with the same provider for more than 2 years, then you are more than likely paying more than you should be.

The reason for this is simple. Most energy suppliers understand that most people are looking for the best deals, so in order to keep up with this they offer great introductory deals. When you find the time, it is always a good idea to use a price comparison site such as uSwitch to mke sure you are getting a fair deal.
